Castles, Toys, And Family Fun In Stansted – Essex
Stansted – Essex is only about one mile from the Stansted/ London international airport. Only thirty miles from London itself, this is a perfect place for a side trip, or even a base outside of the city.
It is no surprise that Mountfitchet castle is a national award winning attraction. Visiting this place is like taking a step back in time. At one time this location served as an Iron age fort. It has also been a Roman signal fort, a Viking settlement, and a Saxon settlement. In the year ten sixty six, William the conqueror built a castle and a motte on this location. Visitors are allowed to roam about the grounds, where they can visit houses, smell the wood smoke, wander through the castle, visit with the free roaming animals and be part of an interactive step back into history. This is actually one part of a three for one admission price attraction.
At the same location, and included in the admission price is the ‘House on the hill toy museum’. This museum is a spectacular dedication to toys that many of us owned years ago. It is hard to imagine over eighty thousand toys all in one location, but that is what will be found here. There are countless dolls, trucks, a Beatles tribute, and even Princess Diana’s bicycle. There is also an amazing exhibit of replications of the crown jewels. Other royal memorabilia will be found here. This is definitely a one of a kind, and a must see’
Along the path to the museum people will be surprised by the greeters. Lifelike dinosaurs will roar a perhaps not so friendly greeting. Have no fear, these dinosaurs will not harm anyone. It is likely a good idea however, to prepare small children about what is ahead, before entering the path. Young and old paleontologists will also have the opportunity to discover hidden fossils when brushing away the sand that covers them.
This dinosaur encounter is also included in the three for one admission deal. People are sure to want to spend the entire day. A picnic lunch is a perfect idea, or perhaps a stop at one of the excellent local restaurants.
