Positive Reviews and Media Attention – Steady Rain
Broadway shows vary in length, story, plot, flashy effects, and many other arenas. One of the latest productions – Steady Rain — was, by far, the least flashy performance to ever be seen on Broadway. While Steady Rain is one that is loved by the audience, the production had not, in early days, received good –or even decent — reviews or attention. Regardless, Steady Rain was on stage through December 2009.
This particular production is different on so many different levels, one of which is the fact that it is only a two man cast. Another aspect of Steady Rain, that is unique to this production, is the lack of flashiness — no dancers, musical instruments, flashy backdrops, etc. You will see nothing other than two men sitting in one place throughout the whole show. The reason for this is that they are reminiscing about their past and what they have endured with each other; therefore, there is no need for expensive scenery. There are many that, upon first hearing this, thing this to be a boring production; however, it has proven to be one of the most emotional stories, on Broadway, of all times.
Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig are the two actors who portray life-long cop friends. They have experienced the best of times together, along with the worst of times. Through these times, the men in this story stayed by each other side. There is no set where this story takes place, as Steady Rain is a story of the men looking back on their lives together. There are no two better actors than Jackman and Craig, to grab the attention of their audience and immediately bring them into the story, making them feel as if they were there.
While this is a riveting story, it is not your typical Broadway production. This being said, Jackman and Craig will only be performing Steady Rain for twelve short weeks. The production debuted in September of 2009, and came to an end in December. Early reviews, of Steady Rain, were more on a negative connotation; but lately, the tone of reviews has begun to rise as more and more are being drawn into this emotional tale. While Hugh and Daniel discuss the tragedies and joyous moments of their friendship, you cannot help but be absorbed in the now.
As we all know, silencing our cell phones — and other electronical devices — is pure courtesy. However, there was an evening, during this production, that an audience member let this slip his mind. You would think, with the serious tone of this show, that the actors would be frustrated and quickly point fingers. However, they simply informed the audience that there was no need to silence or end the call, and that they were just wait till they were finished to move on with their show. The interruption of such a serious performance was handled elegantly, and with a touch of humor.
